Bureau of Statistics Governing Board

The Bureau's Board has 8 members consisting of a Part time Chairman and three (3) other members from the political space as well as one (1) member each from the Ministry of Justice, Finance, State Planning Commission and the Statistician General as the Secretary of the Board and Chief Executive of the Bureau.

Departments and their schedule of duties

The Bureau has five (5) departments as follows:

  • Department of Social and Economic Statistics:
    • Coordination and supervision of statistical activities of various divisions that constitute statistical projects of the department.
    • Work in liaison with relevant department(s) to design and produce data collection formats.
    • Analysis of data on social statistics sector such as Education, Health, Population and Vital Statistics, Crime and Justice, Utility and Infrastructure, Household, Public Safety, Environment etc.
    • Analysis of data on economic statistics sector such as Price, Transport, Public Finance, Agriculture, Production, distribution and consumption of goods, foreign trade, investment etc.
    • Compilation and production of Statistical information on economic Indicators, such as Gross Domestic Product (GDP), Consumer Price Index (CPI), Price Index (PPI), Employment/Unemployment rate, CCI etc, to determine the socio-economic performance of the State economy.
    • Production and dissemination of various statistical publications such as SYB, Statistical Digest, Market Calendar, Price Guide, Sectional Publications etc. as well as run library/sales of the publications.
    • Work in Liaison with relevant department(s) to conduct training programs for the department.
    • Prepare reports for management meetings of the Bureau/Governing Board either on monthly, quarterly, bi-annually and annually for onward submission to government as well as any other duties that may be assigned.
  • Department of Census and Survey:
    • Coordination and supervision of statistical activities of various divisions which comprise MDAs, Zonal and LGAs offices.
    • Work in liaison with relevant department(s) to design data collection formats for statistical surveys.
    • Delineation of Enumeration Areas (EAs) Maps and conducting statistical surveys either alone or jointly in the following areas: Survey of infrastructural facilities, LGA survey, survey into gender equity and equality, Survey of Hotels and Tourist centres, Assessment of impact running grants survey, population census survey etc.
    • Analysis and interpretation of analyzed data collected from surveys as well as publishing and dissemination for planned development of the State and those in need.
    • Collection and collation of routine data for other department(s).
    • Work in Liaison with relevant department(s) to conduct training programs for the department.
    • Prepare reports for management meetings of the Bureau/Governing Board either on monthly, quarterly, bi-annually or annually for onward submission to government as well as any other duties that may be assigned.
  • Department of Information and Communication Technology:
    • The department is responsible for ICT infrastructure and application services to all departments of the Bureau, state and LGA offices.
    • The department is responsible for the supervision, planning and implementation of training programs/Human resources development in the field of statistics as well as management information system (MIS) for the Bureau and other staff in the public service of the State.
    • Maintains and coordinates the sectorial data bases of line ministries by management information system officers hosted from the Bureau.
    • Maintained and update state data bank through collecting information from the line ministries data bases.
    • Prepare reports for management meetings of the Bureau/Governing Board on monthly, quarterly, biannually and annually for onward submission to government as well as any other duties that maybe assigned.
  • Department of Research and Methodology:
    • Development of research instrument.
    • Development of standard codes and classification, development of methodology and appropriate statistical techniques in data collection and statistical analysis through research activities.
    • Provides advisory services to private sector, individuals as well as government agencies.
    • Conduct research into new areas of life.
    • Coordinate the production of periodical reports on research conducted by the Bureau.
    • Work in Liaison with relevant department(s) to conduct training programs for the department.
    • Prepare reports for management meetings of the Bureau/Governing Board either on monthly, quarterly, biannually.
  • Administration & Finance Department:
    • Administration Division:
      • The department plays a role of administrative adviser and assistance to other departments of the organization.
      • The department is responsible for supervising the employment of staff of the organization similarly; work in liaison with other departments on other establishment matters that affects staff such as discipline, promotion, transfer, secondment, posting etc.
      • The department in collaboration with other departments makes sure that all the equipment, machines and other Bureau's assets are maintained or replaced if necessary.
      • Provides support and services for the activities of Bureau's management and Governing Board.
      • Coordination of the department's activities and provision of interaction between departments and the main office.
      • Create appropriate condition for efficient operation of departments and divisions.
      • Carries out the task of planning, organization and ensuring the tasks are carried out to meet the goals of the organization.
      • The department plans how the resources of the organization will be used to meet the output requirement.
      • Work in Liaison with relevant department(s) to conduct training programs for the department.
      • Prepare reports for management meetings of the Bureau/Governing Board either on monthly, quarterly, bi-annually and annually for onward submission to government as well as any other duties that may be assigned.
    • Finance, Supply and Audit Unit Division:
      • Advice the management on all financial matters.
      • Responsible for day to day transactional accounting of the organization.
      • Responsible for management of the organization's cash flow to meet the day-to-day payments.
      • In collaboration with other departments of the Bureau, the department prepares the organizations budgets, rolling plan and report back progress made throughout the year.
      • Maintains and operates Bureau's bank account, all books of account and records of transactions and make such books available for inspection as and when due.
      • It provides information to assist chief executives in making keys strategic decisions.
      • Making payment and keeping bills paid.
      • Processing incoming payments.
      • Make sure everyone gets paid.
      • Prepare financial report.
      • Financial control to avoid errors, fraud and theft.
      • Store Management.
