ADAMAWA STATE AT A GLANCE

Adamawa State (also known as the Land of beauty) was created on 27th August 1991 alongside Taraba State from defunct Gongola State with Yola as its Capital. it is located in the North-East of Nigeria. It seats on a land area of 36, 917 square kilometers making it one the largest States in Nigeria placing it at 8th just behind Zamfara at 7th. It is bordered to the Northwest by Borno State, Gombe State to the West and Taraba State to the Southwest. It also shares International borders with Cameroon to the East. The State has 3 Senatorial Districts, 8 Federal Constituencies and 21 Local Government Areas as shown in the table below:

POPULATION

The 2006 National Population census place Adamawa at 26th in Nigeria with a Population figure of 3,178,950 comprising 1, 561, 978 Females and 1, 606, 101 Males. Its projected Population is placed at 4,902,100 as at 2021.


CLIMATE AND WEATHER

It has tropical climate occasioned by two seasons: Dry season (October to April) and; Rainy season (May to September). The average annual rainfall is 79mm up North especially around Michika and Madagali areas. The average annual in the South especially, around Ganye and Toungo is 179mm. The Weather conditions comprises moderate to extremely cold Weather during the Harmattan accompanied by dusty winds from the Sahara (September to February) and extremely hot Weather (March to April). Average temperatures range from 15.2 o C in some regions during harmattan to 43 o C in others when the Weather is hot.

The Executive Governor Of Adamawa State

Rt. Hon. Ahmadu Umaru Fintiri (AUF) was born on October 27th, 1967 in Gulak, Madagali Local Government area of Adamawa State. He grew up in a world that had become so conscious of the primacy of Western Education and Religious knowledge, both of which he struggled to acquire at an early age.

He had his early primary School in Central Primary School Gulak from 1975-1981, Government Day Secondary School Gulak and Government Secondary School Michika from 1981-1986.

AUF holds a post graduate Diploma in Policy and Strategic studies, from the University of Maiduguri 2004 after obtaining his first degree in History from the same University in 1992.

Most of his teachers, mentors and contemporaries know AUF as an outstanding Student and an athlete throughout his boyhood and adolescent years. After successfully running his private business enterprise, he was elected to represent Madagali Constituency in 2007 and re-elected in 2011.

He held several leadership positions in the House of Assembly before being elected as the Speaker, a position he held until 2015. AUF was also, twice, The Governor of Adamawa State in Acting capacity. Even though brief, his tenures as Acting Governor were quite memorable because of the giant strides achieved.

Ahmadu Umaru Fintiri is the current Governor of State and was Hon. Member of the Adamawa State House of Assembly. He was later appointed the Speaker of the House. He eventually became the acting Governor following the impeachment of admiral Murtala Hammmanyero Nyako in July 2014, handed later to Bala James Ngilari after serving for three months.

Fintiri won the Governorship election of Adamawa State that took place on the 9th of March 2019. However, the election was declared inconclusive because the number of cancelled votes was more than the margin between the winner and his close opponent.

Umaru Fintiri was declared winner of the election in the early hours of Friday after having secured 376,552 votes to defeat incumbent Governor Jibrilla Bindow of the All Progressives Congress (APC) who polled 336,386 votes.

AUF is married with four children.

VEGETATION

There are two notable vegetation zones within the State: The Sub-sudan zone and; the Northern Guinea Savannah zone. The sub- sudan is marked by thick forest, tall trees and tall grasses commonly found in the southern part of the State especially in temperate areas of Banga plateau of Mayo-belwa Local Government Area and some villages of Ganye and Toungo Local Government Areas.

Cash crops grown by the people include cotton, cowpea, bambaranuts, tomatoes, onions, pepper, and sugarcane among others. Fruits produced in the State include pawpaw, guava, cashew, mango, banana and orange.

The soil condition in the State favour's the cultivation of wide range of crops. The soils found in the State include LUVISOLS, CAMBISOLS and VERTISOLS among others.

About ADSBS

Introduction

The bill for the establishment of the Adamawa State Bureau of Statistics (SBS) was submitted to the 7th State House of Assembly in 2017 and was passed into law and assented to by His Excellency, the former Executive Governor, Senator Muhammadu Umaru Jibrilla on 26th of April 2017. By this law, the State Statistical System (SSS) and the Adamawa State Bureau of Statistics (ADSBS) were established and granted autonomy as obtainable in other states of the federation and at the national level.

The Bureau is the main State agency responsible for the development and management of official statistics, and also the authoritative source and custodian of official Statistics in the State. Thus, any data that is obtained without the consent of the Bureau is not officially recognized by the Law or Government.

Mandates

The mandates of the State Bureau of Statistics with the status of Scientific and Research Government Organization are Collection, Compilation, Analysis, Storage and Dissemination of Statistical Data/Information. It also develops, maintain, protect and enhance the integrity of such official statistics in the state and exercise professional independence.

Functions

To be able to achieve the above mandates, the Bureau is saddled with the responsibility to carry out the following functions:

  • Advise State and Local Governments in all matters relating to statistical development;
  • Co-ordinate the State Statistical System (SSS) that consists of Producer of Statistics (Bureau), Supplier, Users, and Research institutions.
  • Developing and promoting the use of Statistical standards and appropriate methodologies in the State Statistical System;
  • Collecting, compiling, analyzing, interpreting, publishing, and disseminating statistical information alone or in collaboration with other agencies, both governmental and non-Governmental agencies;
  • Developing and maintaining a comprehensive State Data Bank by encouraging Ministries, Departments, and agencies (MDAs) to develop their sectorial Data Bases and forward them to the Bureau.
  • Carrying out any other functions relating to statistics as the State Government may assign to the Bureau.

The vision for the State Bureau of Statistics and State statistical system is one of the proactive, coordinated, well-managed and resourced systems capable of meeting statistical data and information needs of society towards sustainable State development and poverty reduction.

The missions of the State Bureau of Statistics and State statistical system are:

  • To raise public awareness about the importance and role of statistical information to the society;
  • To collect, process, analyze, and disseminate quality statistical data and information in a coordinated and timely manner;
  • To promote the use of best practice and international standards in statistical production management and dissemination;
  • To promote the use of statistical data and information at individual, Local Government, State, Institutional, National, and International levels especially for evidence base policy design and decision-making;
  • To build sustainable capacity for the production and use of statistical data and information in the State for planning purpose and coordination of the State statistical System.
